Facebook is the way?

There are many thriving and vibrant online music forum communities. Usually they're centered around a record label or a news website. Make it enticing for the users to talk and contribute, and they will come and stay.

so Ska music isn't a thriving enough community for discussion?
I get it The Trojan forum and Pama forums all have good stuff happening
I just wonder about this site.
We used to have a lot of people posting. So where did everyone go?

It has been a bit quiet of late here but I don't have a Facebook account so lets keep it going.

Let's be honest here, it's not like the ska scene is vibrant as it used to be. At least in LA, things have been so quiet and dead recently, so it would be natural for the online community to be the same way.

However, how would ska/reggae fans even find this place? Is it advertised? Do people talk about it? Labels and news websites it's easier to attract since people go there to find information. I don't even remember how I found this place to begin with but I stay because I like the music and I'm addicted to various forums.

Life gets in the way to a certain extent. I think a lot of the old regulars here are of an age that we get distracted by life, work, etc. and don't spend the same amount of time involved in the "scene" anymore. I still buy CDs (way too many), but I barely make it to shows or DJ nights any more. Occasionally I post on the Ska sub-reddit, but that's many to teach the youngins.

Be warned there is a LOT of garbage to wade through, it's mostly filled with 16 year old kids, but sometimes it's fun to A) wind them up B ) teach them something

I really liked this site because it was a good resource for finding new music release dates and show dates.

The Calendar part was something I looked at all the time to find shows. I know it must have been a pain for Robin to update it but show dates were also posted by the bands.

So if facebook is the way to go, is there a similar facebook site for somebody looking for shows in the LA area or release dates, etc?

i don't pay much attention to ska anymore. i used to come here to hear about new albums, but since there hasn't been much in the way of info i have nothing to contribute opinion-wise.

i can't personally say i know of any ska or reggae bands that i follow these days. not sure why, just kinda drifted away. the slackers were the last band (after the aggrolites) i stuck with but their last album didn't get me excited like they used to.

funny thing is there have been a handful of great ska shows here in portland as of the last year or so (some i have participated in) when there generally were never any to speak of.

the sentiments, middle age ska enjoy club, the longshots and georgetown orbits are keeping the grooves alive in the NW...high time someone put out an epic album!

The original idea for the forum was to build a bigger community site but it just never got going. Part of that was also to have multiple bands and sites all using the same forum to create a bigger base of users.

There are a LOT of bands that don't even have websites these days so that's part of the issue.

There are some sites that have links to the forum. It's time to start getting more sites to use it again.

but there are a TON of new releases coming out. Plenty of shows to discuss BUT no one does reviews (live or CD) much anymore

I think the Calender thing is a big issue - there is no one place to find stuff out. I'd want to make it national though and not just localized

If I could find someway to create and have the site pull info to update easily enough with a searchable database for city/ state etc I think it'd be really good.
